New Project: Well Rounded Sound 2016 Catalogue

We are excited to share our photographic art direction, illustration and design of the 2016 product catalogue for Well Rounded Sound, a boutique speaker company providing music aficionados with the finest sound achievable in the desktop domain using eco-friendly materials. All products are manufactured and designed in the USA.

Our goal was to create a product catalogue that showcased the handmade, sustainable quality of the speakers without glossing over the technical detail of the engineering and construction that audiophiles appreciate. Designed to sit at a desk or fill up an entire room, these beautiful speakers can be heard above the competition. Their cylindrical enclosures, full range drivers, integrated stands, internal and external damping along with proprietary multilayer enclosure technology are proof that beauty can have a purpose.

New Project: Osmosis

We are happy to share our identity, branding, website and motion graphics for Osmosis, a video strategy and production agency at the forefront of applying filmmaking to the financial services, education, and non-profit and corporate sectors for a variety of purposes. They work with innovative organizations to help improve their internal and external communications through the creation of films that inspire, inform and entertain.

The goal of this project was to create a brand identity that spoke to the power of video. This was achieved by creating a network of intersecting lines that could exist in static and animated forms to illustrate external and internal communications coming together as one. The mark’s circular form also references vision—literally an eye—to represent the form in which they are able to deliver important messages and convey narratives. The brand identity along with the website and motion graphics confidently deliver the message that Osmosis can capture their clients vision, inspire their audience and tell their story on film.

New Project: Spruce & Bond

We are happy to share our naming, identity, branding, packaging, website and photographic art direction for New York-based Spruce & Bond, a sophisticated lifestyle-driven hair removal studio specializing in wax, laser and brow treatments. Formerly known as Completely Bare, the company’s re-launch marks a period of meaningful change and growth, during which they will be exploring non-traditional retail models such as pop-ups, express locations, at-home services and shop-in-shops.

The challenge was to create a brand identity that conveyed the right balance of expertise and playfulness. Beauty, simplification and the notion of removal highlight the spirited ethos of the brand through a stripped down ‘SB’ monogram combined with elegant typography. The website (with an enhanced online booking experience), store signage and collateral, as well as new specialist uniforms help evolve the brand to deliver a more modern and curated experience.

Coverage includes design inspiration, design genres, and design education, with discussion of the specific career options available in print, interactive, and motion design.

New Project: Moving Cloud Flowing Water

Hinterland has designed a book, Moving Cloud Flowing Water, that investigates the various connections between the people of Northeast India. Published by The Medical Mission Sisters, a community of dedicated women with almost 600 Canonical members and 100 Associates. They offer care and compassion to millions of individuals around the world. Over the past 89 years their mission has evolved from curative, to preventative, to promotive, to community-based, to holistic health care.

The primary goal when designing was to create a record of the mosaic of cultures in the relatively unexplored eastern-most region of India connected to East India via a narrow corridor squeezed between Bhutan and Bangladesh. The various tribes each with its own language, traditions, customs and costumes were given equal importance through a poetic use of language, color (especially color), typography and scale.

Profiled: Thinking Through Design

We are excited to announce that Scott Buschkuhl, the Principal at Hinterland, participated as a table facilitator at Thinking Through Design, the 15th Symposium on Communication-Intensive Teaching and Learning at the Bernard L. Schwartz Communication Institute at Baruch College on May 29.

For the past 15 years, this day-long event has brought thought leaders in business and education to explore how to help undergraduates and beginning professionals grow into strategic, thoughtful communicators and creators. This year’s Symposium focused on the methodology of “design thinking” and its application to an educational context. Design Thinking is characterized by real-world problem solving, collaboration, research, and the expectation that many ideas must be generated, discarded or reworked to meet the needs of an end user or particular audience. Ellen Lupton, Curator of Contemporary Design at Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City, delivered the keynote address.

Awards: Well Rounded Sound selected a winner in Typography 35

Hinterland is excited to announce that our work for Well Rounded Sound has been recognized by the Type Directors Club in Typography 35, a judged competition showcasing the year’s best typographic work in print and on screen in advertising, communications, education, marketing, and publishing. There was a total of over 2000 entries, from 43 countries, from which 209, from 18 countries, were selected. As a winner our work will also be included in 7 exhibitions touring cities in the United States, Canada, France, England, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Spain, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam.

Well Rounded sound is a boutique speaker company providing music aficionados with the finest sound achievable in the desktop domain using eco-friendly materials. All products are manufactured and designed in the USA. In addition to the identity we also created a stationery system, e-commerce website and provided photographic art direction. This project has been published in a book, Typography 35, available here.

New Project: Devona

Hinterland has created an identity and stationery system for Devona, an interactive agency that provides strategy, design, development, deployment, management and reporting for products and brands in a digital space. The products they make are interactive—not because they’re websites, mobile apps, banners or social media campaigns, but because they deliver experiences based on the users’ input.

The challenge was to create an identity that conveyed the responsive exchange of information. Starting with computer languages associated with interactive development we dug even deeper, landing on binary code. Zeros and ones became the creative foundation for the bespoke typeface created for Devona. Laser cut business cards take a static experience to a new level by presenting an identity the recipient must ‘interact’ with.

12.11.14

New Project: Foald

Hinterland has created an identity and packaging for Foald, a design laboratory driven by curiosity and beauty operating at the intersection of creation and conservation. Their first product is Pillar, a lightweight, collapsible notebook computer stand designed to address poor posture everywhere you go. The design for Pillar is informed by the basalt columns which populate the breathtaking landscape of Iceland.

The challenge was to create a brand identity and packaging that conveyed the right balance of poetry and functionality. The logotype is influenced by and built from the same elements that inform the product, a hexagon. Given that the brand name is an action, the bespoke typography folds around itself with minimal elements evoking at once familiarity, futurism and history.

Awards: Well Rounded Sound a winner in Print Magazine’s Regional Design Annual 2014

Well Rounded sound is a boutique speaker company providing music aficionados with the finest sound achievable in the desktop domain using eco-friendly materials. All products are manufactured and designed in the USA. In addition to the identity we also created a stationery system, e-commerce website and provided photographic art direction. This project has been published in the current issue of the magazine and as a PDF, available here.

New Project: Ghostly International

Hinterland has created a selection of t-shirt designs for Ghostly International, a multi-platform cultural curator, a tightly knit aesthetic universe fulfilling the roles of art gallery, design house, clothing designer, technology innovator, music-publishing company—and, yes, record label—in one. The Ghostly ethos is to bring great art to people with open eyes and open ears.

The goal was to create a visual presence as distinctive as the music output of Ghostly. We put a disorienting spin on some of the Ghostly brand staples. These designs have been crafted by hand and then photographed, others have been drawn and brought into the computer for a clean vector based presentation. Each fits comfortably in the world of art and music. Check out all of the t-shirts here.

New Project: The Nantucket Project

In a collaboration between Hinterland and Hitchcock Partners, Hinterland designed a premium spirit packaging and almanac for The Nantucket Project, an annual gathering of some of the world’s leading thinkers, visionaries, and performers. Triple Eight Distillery, a micro-distillery that makes a variety of hand crafted premium spirits, created a small whisky batch using only natural ingredients especially for the event. The Nantucket Project and Triple Eight are in the distillation business. One distills ideas while the other distills the finest spirits.

The two unique gifts we created had to impress attendees that have seen it all such as Mikhail Gorbachev, Eve Ensler, Larry Summers to name a few. We achieved this by creating something with a nod to tradition and history but with an eye on a distinct voice for the future. Each piece reflects a forward thinking, ever-developing, modern organization.

New Project: Tech Talk at Cannes Lions

Hinterland has created the branding, identity and exhibition design for Tech Talk, an event of daily sessions at Cannes Lions to discover the latest in forward-thinking technology. We worked closely with the team at MediaLink—a leading advisory firm that provides critical counsel to clients in the marketing, media, entertainment and technology industries—the hosts of Tech Talk. Businesses participating in Tech Talk are given the opportunity to demonstrate their pioneering work in the digital-marketing industry.

When creating the identity for Tech Talk a variety of goals were taken into account; it had to feel comfortable in the print, digital and physical space and be able to travel to other locations throughout the year. The bold color, large typography and illustration fit perfectly with this thoroughly modern event. The lion graphic makes direct reference to the location at the Cannes Lions Festival while also becoming a symbol of the exciting discourse attendees will be treated to: Hear these forward-thinking businesses roar!

New Project: Wang Xingwei at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art

We designed a book for a large-scale retrospective of one of China’s most mature and wide-ranging contemporary painters, Wang Xingwei, at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art. UCCA is a comprehensive, not-for-profit art center serving a global Beijing public.Taking into account his famously quirky sensibility, the exhibition was organized neither chronologically nor by subject matter, but by the relationship of the subject to the canvas (frontal, rear and profile).

When designing this dual language catalogue, in both Chinese and English, we aimed to create a seamless interaction of the book with the physical space. The design of the book achieved this goal with a vibrant color palette and chapter openers that directly influenced the exhibition signage.
